I own an older Cannon 35mm still camera with all manual controls for the aperature/focus/f-stop.

What I am wondering is this:

If I learn to run this 35mm still camera will I be able to run a motion picture camera when I get the chance?

I have the impression that still cameras and motion picture cameras are the same except one takes pictures one at a time and the other takes 24 a second.

    Is this true?

Yah, they're extremely similar. The initial idea between the two are the same. However, obviously a film camera is little more complicated.

But, to answer question again. Yes, if you are really good with a SLR proper still camera you will have no problem learning how to operate a motion picture camera.
